First of all I want to apologize for leaving John Morgan's name off of the list I prepared when I wrote about the Boy's Oratorical Contest.  John was definitely there, so there was, counting myself, thirteen Optimists at the Boy's Oratorical Contest instead of just twelve.  Well I have a list of names of those who attended the Girl's Oratorical Contest, 22 in all, and I have a description of the great dinner Ebie provided, but what I don't have is time to list and describe it all.  Suffice to say it was a great evening with 27 parents, siblings, and counselors present, 3 judges, and 10 contestants.  Now we are back on track with our next meeting being a regular breakfast meeting at Mimi's this coming Thursday.  See you there.

  • What you missed!
Thursday night February 22nd, twelve Optimists, Gary Lee, Don Brown, Bob Green, Ebie Ghaneian,, Bob Hughlett, Kay Fujimura, Ray Lovell, Waldo Arballo, John Dieken, George Dominguez, Jeff Green, and Pete Sinclair, along with 22 parents and counselors, 3 judges, and 7 contestants all braved the rain to attend the Optimist Meeting held in the Community Center at Liberty Park.  There they were treated to some of the finest cuisine imaginable. California Chicken gently laid on an even bed of honey suckled spring rice, accented with a vegetable cornucopia of carrots, zucchini, cabbage, and broccoli, a dinner roll of exquisite texture and favor, a world renown selection of soft drinks and bottled water, and cream puffs to die for.  This was followed by seven speeches on the theme of "My Greatest Challenge Is".  We should all be so introspective!  This was the boys portion of the Oratorical Contest and those that were there heard a 13 year old youth tell of his father's alcoholism and the subsequent betrayal of his love for his Dad, and the youth's determination to confront and overcome his greatest challenge, that of forgiveness!  A lesson we can all take to heart.

We will have the second part of the Oratorical Contest, the girl's portion again in the Community Center at Liberty Park.  I have asked Ebie to serve homemade Sloppy Joes accented with macaroni and cheese.  No!  I wouldn't do that to the girls.  The food is ready to serve at 6:15p.m. and the program starts at 7:00p.m., after 7:00p.m. no one will be allowed in during a speech, only between speeches. Please be there!  We Optimists surely should out number the parents and counselors and believe me you will leave the evening filled with admiration for our Communities' youth.
