President's Message - January 2006

A Message From George

Our Optimist year began in October with a big bang at our annual installation dinner. Ellen Latino magically found her bell and gavel just in time to pass them on to me, who has a hard time holding on to them. Our installation dinner was a grand overall success thanks to Jack Evans, whose knowledge and experience is legendary.

Ed Merhabskie did a smooth wrap on the month of October, chairing the Haunted House program. As you know, Ed does a great job of keeping witches and goblins in line and out of our hair. Thanks, Ed, for keeping our Optimist family safe.

In November, Mike Inouye came off the bench and hit back to back home runs. He connected with each of our local high schools, inviting each school’s most deserving student to represent their respective school at our annual Youth Appreciation Awards Dinner.

The month of December wrapped up our Optimist year and what a wrap! Tom Fitzgerald chaired our Needy Family program, which was a huge success. Thanks also to Ray Lovell for his assistance and to the Artesia-Cerritos Soroptimist ladies for their diligent assistance and many good works. Two thousand pounds of food items were collected and shared among 20 selected very needy families. Also thanks to Don Brown and Roger Garrett for the family holiday party. Over 125 people attended the fun-filled celebration.

As we put the final wrap on special programs for 2005 and get ready for 2006, please take a moment to reflect on the best we accomplished and that we are, in fact, “Bringing out the Best in Kids.”
